In a land of great material wealth, the people are hurting and spiritually impoverished. The Japanese people maintain a pleasant and orderly appearance in public, but spiritual needs lurk underneath that veneer.
The nation has been in economic malaise for nearly two decades. The culture demands lavish conformity from grade school all the way up to the business arena. Japanese “salarymen” work long hours and travel great distances, sometimes even renting separate apartments to be near their workplace. Unable to conform to their peers, a million young men have isolated themselves in their bedrooms, having withdrawn from society. The suicide rate is one of the highest in the world where many people join “suicide clubs” looking for strangers to die with. Young women are staying at home with their parents, immersing themselves in consumerism, and refusing to marry. Whether they are in the traditional rural towns or in the urban metropolitan cities, the Japanese are turning to addictions and bizarre extremes to fill the emptiness of their hearts.
TEAM has a passion to take the heart of God to the heart of Japan.
